Mozilla has made a big announcement regarding its open web apps platform, it is going to start taking submissions from developers. That means that devs can start getting their web apps ready for distribution in the Mozilla Marketplace.

“Today, we are incredibly proud to announce that the Mozilla Marketplace will open for developer submissions next week during Mobile World Congress. If you are an app developer interested in distributing and monetizing your app across device and platform silos, you should submit your app to the Mozilla Marketplace,” Mozilla announced.

Mozilla plans to open up an app store that will allow developers to target several platform and devices. What’s more, apps built for Mozilla’s app store will be usable on any platform or browser that implements support for the specifications.

It’s still too early and there are plenty of app stores out there, but Mozilla’s looks to be the first and only open market for apps.

One thing that we’re all waiting to see is what the next-generation Motorola devices will look like, especially after Google completes that acquisition of the vendor.

Rumor has it that the next Google phone will arrive on shelves from this smartphone designer, and that it will be jaw-dropping, just as the currently available Nexus devices were.

However, while some of us sit tight and wait for details on this to emerge, there are also those who stepped up and started to imagine what the device would look like.

Shaik Imaduddin is one of them, and his Motorola Nexus RAZR concept phone offers an idea of what the first Android 5.0-powered smartphone might be all about.

Of course, Android 5.0 Jelly Bean is only a rumor too, the same as any plans from Motorola to come up with the next Google phone out there.

However, concepts like this are always great means to stir our imagination and to make us want more of what’s to come.

Motorola Nexus RAZR, provided that the smartphone maker really launches a device with this name, will feature a 7mm thin body, stepping in its predecessor’s shoes.

Moreover, the phone was imagined with a large 5-inch touchscreen display on the front, and with a 16-megapixel photo snapper on the back.

The Android 5.0-based device is powered by Nvidia’s quad-core Tegra 3 application processor, being capable of delivering the increased performance capabilities anyone expects from it.

Only a concept device for the time being, this smartphone might become reality soon. After all, we already have Android phones available on shelves with 5.3-inch screens, and we’re waiting for those packing 16MP cameras to be put up for sale following their official unveiling.

All in all, Motorola Nexus RAZR looks highly appealing, and enthusiasts would certainly lineup in front of stores to purchase it if ever launched.

The BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 that started to arrive on RIM’s first tablet PC out there brought along a nice set of new features and enhancements.

Among them, we can count a series of video chat capabilities that will certainly make PlayBook users rejoice.

There is a new interface for users to take advantage of, along with contact integration and optimizations for the larger screen of the PlayBook.

“Simply put, Video Chat on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet allows you to make and take video calls with your friends, family, and colleagues who also have a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet,” Vivek Gupta, RIM product manager, explains.

“(Note: Both users of the Video Chat feature must be connected to the Internet for a chat to be enabled.) With just one click, you’ll be able to have virtual face-to-face conversations using the HD video cameras and stunning high-resolution screen on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.”

The Video Chat user interface resembles the one available for the new email, calendar and contact apps and should deliver a new feel to all users.

In the new PlayBook 2.0 OS, those who will use Video Chat will also be able to take advantage of the multitasking capabilities of the device so as to view pictures, write notes, browse the web and do more.

Moreover, there is a Presenter Mode included into the mix, offering the possibility to project a video chat on a larger screen for better viewing. If in a conference room, users will also be able to share slides and spreadsheets without disrupting the video chat.

“One of the key differentiating features of the new Video Chat for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is that it now automatically discovers which of your contacts are Video Chat “capable” and displays their “availability” to Video Chat – no guesses and disappointments,” Vivek Gupta continues.

Users will be able to view, edit, and create new contacts for Video Chat straight from the Contacts application, as well as from the updated Video Chat software. They will also be able to make a video call straight from the Contacts application when viewing the contact’s information details.

We may have already mentioned a certain deal that Barnes & Noble has decided to offer, but the company has now made the official announcement, one that reveals a second product change as well.

It is easy enough to summarize B&N’s latest marketing maneuver as an attempt to face Amazon a bit more directly on the tablet and e-reader front.

After all, if the latter didn’t have a more affordable tablet, B&N probably would not have bothered reducing the price at the cost of storage capacity.

Either way, this is precisely what happened: the Nook Tablet lost eight out of sixteen GB of storage space in order to shed off $50 / 37.88 Euro from its price tag.

We have known of this since yesterday, and we have even written about it, but it seems B&N made it official with a PR announcement.

“For any customer who likes to read digitally, watch movies or TV shows, browse the web, or help their kids read and learn through interactive books and apps, our new $199 NOOK Tablet with 8GB is the best product value on the market,” said William Lynch, chief executive officer of Barnes & Noble.

“NOOK Tablet is the highest-rated wireless media tablet in the 7-inch class, ultra-portable at under a pound, offers our exclusive VividView™ screen technology, and since its introduction this holiday has received rave reviews from customers about all its great features. We’re pleased to now offer customers the ability to experience NOOK Tablet’s unmatched content experience for only $199.”

What the company also did was cut the price of the Nook Color, the device that is an Android tablet in all but name (it is marketed as an e-reader). At $169 (127.80 Euro) instead of $199 (150.49 Euro), it is cheaper than the Kindle Touch without ads.

“NOOK Tablet, NOOK Color and NOOK Simple Touch represent the highest-quality portfolio of reading and entertainment products on the market at the best value,” Lynch says.

Apparently, Microsoft is hard at work with revamping its SkyDrive cloud service with a series of highly appealing new features.

The Redmond-based software giant is reportedly gearing up for the release of a SkyDrive Wave 5 Milestone 3, which should bring along support for BitLocker recovery keys storage, along with some other features as well.

Previously, we reported on Microsoft’s possible plans to add paid subscriptions to its SkyDrive offering, so as to provide users with more storage space than they already benefit from.

It seems that it was only the tip of the iceberg, and that there will be far more enhancements coming to SkyDrive users via new updates to the service.

Among them, we can count the option to have BitLocker recovery keys stored in SkyDrive, at least this is what a recent article on LiveSide reads.

The feature might be linked to Windows 8 and its availability, and will require for uses to verify their identity using a confirmation number via email or SMS, or by accessing the service via a trusted computer.

Additionally, the forthcoming SkyDrive update should add into the mix support for OpenDocument Formats, including .odt, .odp, and .ods, in addition to allowing the creation of Microsoft Office’s Open XML formats, such as .docx, .xlsx, .pptx.

As previously mentioned, Microsoft is also rumored to plan the release of new SkyDrive applications for Windows and Mac users. It is expected to offer access to files and folders on the computer using the SkyDrive interface.

The next SkyDrive update might also bring along a URL Shortening service, so that direct link to files and folders stored on SkyDrive will not be as long as before.

Other features expected to make it to SkyDrive soon include Direct Share to Twitter (and other services), along with an increase of the individual file size limit to 300 MB (it was brought up to 100 MB in June 2011).

Clearly, all these are welcomed changes to the service, though it remains to be seen how many of them will actually become available for the end users.

Not only did she call him out during her latest concert by holding a fan-made sign reading “Take notes Chris Brown,” but she also spoke again about how we shouldn’t encourage domestic violence by supporting a known abuser as Brown.

“Get a good picture now, put it on Twitter. I’ve been in a world of hurt with Chris Brown fans lately… but see, I just have to speak my mind because where I come from beating up on a woman is never okay,” she said.

“So that’s why my daddy taught me early on in life how to use a shotgun,” she added, before launching into a live rendition of “Gunpowder and Lead.”

The song is about a woman who’s preparing to kill her abusive husband – just so you know why she’s relating Brown, who infamously beat up his girlfriend Rihanna 3 years ago, to the shotgun.

Sifting trough the code that makes up Apple’s Messages application, Consomac discovered that the end of the beta trial will pop up the following message on users’ screens:

Thank you for participating in the Messages Beta program. With the inclusion of Messages in OS X Mountain Lion, the Messages Beta program has ended.

To continue using Messages, please visit the Mac App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion.

The message indisputably suggests that the final version of the Messages app will be restricted to Mountain Lion. The beta app is only intended for testing purposes on existing Mac configurations before Mountain Lion ships this summer.

By far one of the coolest new features in OS X 10.8 aka Mountain Lion, Messages is the iChat replacement that allows users to exchange free texts between Macs and iOS devices, complete with photos and videos. The app boasts standard IM-features as well, like the ability to see when your friends are typing a reply.

After seeding a developer preview version of Mountain Lion to Mac developers this week, Apple revealed that Messages was a huge new addition to the OS.

According to the Cupertino giant, Messages does everything iChat does, and then some.

It has integrated support for iMessage, the free text messaging standard introduced by Apple in iOS 5. Anyone with an iOS 5 device can now send a receive these types of text messages to and from a Macintosh computer running the Messages app.

The service is now in Beta for OS X 10.7 Lion users, but when the trial ends – i.e. when Mountain Lion gets ready to ship – it will be an exclusive feature to OS X 10.8. If you’re interested in testing it out, download the beta app right here.

Apple only asks users to note that “When you install Messages, it replaces iChat. But iChat services will continue to work.”

Messages supports iMessage, AIM, Yahoo!, Google Talk, and Jabber protocols

The Messages app isn’t limited to sending / receiving photos and videos. If it can handle those, sure enough it will also let you swap documents with your buddies.

“You can see when your message has been delivered and when someone’s typing a reply,” Apple says. “Turn on read receipts, and they’ll see when you’ve read a message.”

Users can start a conversation on their Mac and pick it up on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

The messages are encrypted end-to-end so they stay safe and private. Best of all, you can start a conversation on your Mac and pick it up on your mobile device, or vice versa.

Apple has confirmed that OS X Mountain Lion will ship in late-summer 2012. The software will be available exclusively from the Mac App Store as a digital download.
